Jonathan D. Spence was born in Surrey,
England, in 1936. He was educated at Winchester College and at
Cambridge University and received his Ph.D. from Yale University in
1965. He is George Burton Adams Professor of HIstory at Yale, where
he is also chairman of the Council on East Asian Studies and
director of the Division of the Humanities.

让人觉得讽刺的是，中国人对国史和县史的撰写至为周备，地方记录却多半未见保存。我们通常找不到验尸官验尸、行会交易、严密的土地租赁记录，或教区出生、婚姻、死亡记录之类的资料——而正是这些资料，使我们能对欧洲中世纪后期的历史，作极其周密细致的解读。
兄食其弟，夫食其妻，辄相谓曰：与其为人食，不如吾自食，稍延旦夕之命。
改嫁者，夫家财产及原有妆奁，并听前夫之家为主。
妇人夫亡无子守志者，合承夫分，须凭族长择昭穆相当之人继嗣。
凡祖父母、父母为人所殴，子孙即时获救，而还殴，非折伤勿论；至折伤以上，减凡三等。致死者，依常律。
若祖父母、父母为人所杀，而子孙擅杀行凶人者，杖六十；其即时杀死者，勿论。
其他的一些案子显示，士兵也会经由一种相当微妙的诈骗游戏骚扰无辜：士兵甲假装成一名逃犯，逃到一艘停泊在船中或某个偏僻的村庄，其他士兵借着酒来“逮捕”他，假装是捕快，借口当地村民窝藏人犯而加以骚扰，并在离开时抢夺他们。或者，他们会暂时在某个村庄中，以雇工的身份出现，然后在某个晚上一起饮酒时，割伤自己，撕碎自己的衣服，然后宣称遭到“抢夺”，以便从当地村民手中获得封口钱。如果村民开始怀疑，他们的朋友之一就会出面，宣称是来自逃犯所属单位的上级长官，要把他们带回。
