The materialist is forced to introduce the idea of two different appearances of the same fact, but this notion of appearance itself depends upon there being facts of appearance that cannot be identified with brain facts....So the mind cannot be reduced to the brain.
Now the question is whether our minds are, from a superior conceptual standpoint, similarly impoverished with respect to certain domains of reality,specially our own consciousness. Surely this cannot be ruled out a priori: it is the purest dogmatism to believe that the human mind, at this particular stage of evolutionary history, has reached the pinnacle of cognitive capacity. On the contrary, there are all sorts of natural limitations to human intelligence, as we are all painfully aware.
At root, the reason we cannot solve the mind-body problem is that we cannot see the mind. Nature has equipped us with self-awareness so that we can detect what is going on in the spatial world around us. But these cognitive faculties are not designed to fathom what links mind to brain.
The question, as always, is whether the cognitive abilities with which evolution has equipped us are adequate to developing the radically new conception of space that I am saying is required for understanding conscious...Our awareness of space is conditioned by our mammalian physiology, our specific senses, our characteristic musculature....There are facts about objective space that our natural intellectual tools are not equipped to handle. Just as we can not see every facet of space, so we cannot understand everything about it. Our understanding is spatial, just as our perception is.
I suggest that our ignorance here is an ignorance of a hidden architecture of the self. Something about the hidden structure of the self determines its unity and identity, but we do not grasp this structure, which is why we cannot answer question about unity and identity with any reliability. It is not that we know the essential nature of the self but fail to understand under what physical conditions it exists; rather,we are ignorant of what the self intrinsically is.
