One of the essential artists of our time, Cy Twombly is known primarily for his paintings, but his less well known sculptural oeuvre is an important dimension of his work as an artist. This large-format publication reveals his extensive body of sculptural work. Inspired by Kurt Schwitters, Giacometti, and Surrealist object art, some of his early assemblages date back to the 50s-these pieces are composed of everyday found objects, which Tombly arranged in the form of magical or fetishistic objects; later he began to cover them with a uniform coat of white paint. Thus placed in a new formal context, the original meaning of the individual pieces is blurred, opening them up to a limitless horizon of associations, connecting them with a wide range of cultural references. Literature and music are evoked, archaic civilizations come to life, even landscapes and the natural elegance of plants are implied. Twombly's always-white sculptures contain both an odd, ethereal quality and an aura of timeless poetry.

Neuer Blick auf das umfangreiche plastische Werk Cy Twomblys, mit bisher unveröffentlichtem Bildmaterial und neu entstandenen Fotografien.
Cy Twombly, einer der prominentesten Künstler unserer Zeit, ist vor allem als Maler bekannt. In dieser großformatigen Publikation ist das umfangreiche plastische Oeuvre zu entdecken: Angeregt durch Schwitters, durch Giacometti und die Objektkunst der Surrealisten, entstanden schon in den fünfziger Jahren die frühen Assemblagen aus Fundstücken der Alltagswelt, deren Anordnung Twombly die Gestalt magischer Gegenstände oder Fetische gab und denen er bald einen vereinheitlichenden Überzug aus weißer Farbe verlieh. In einem neuen formalen Zusammenhang verwischt sich so die ursprüngliche Bedeutung der Einzelstücke und öffnet sich einem vielfältigen Assoziationsradius. Meist erschließen sich weite, kulturhistorische Dimensionen. Andere Künste wie Literatur und Musik erscheinen einbezogen; Zeugnisse archaischer, versunkener Kulturen werden lebendig, aber auch an Landschaft und die natürliche Eleganz von Pflanzen, von Blüten, die immer auch eine metaphorische Lesart nahe legen, wird erinnert. Weiß ist die Farbe von Twomblys Skulpturen geblieben, weiß ist auch ihr Licht. Es entmaterialisiert sie, verleiht ihnen eine neue Identität und die Aura zeitloser Poesie.

Synopsis
Cy Twombly's assemblages are composed of humble everyday found objects, which he arranges in the form of magical objects or fetishes, later covering them in white paint. Thus placed in a new formal context, the original meaning of individual pieces is blurred, opening them up for a range of associations, which frequently refer to the expansive dimensions of cultural history. White is still the colour of Twombly's sculptures, and their light is white too. This dematerializes them, giving them a new identity and an aura of timeless poetry.
