新英格兰是知识杂交的沃土。“共和国”（Commonwealth）一词就如“征用权”和“公用事业”这两个词一样，表达了对公私利益交融的信念。这是清教徒对马萨诸塞州的旧称，在1780年的马萨诸塞州宪法中重新提到这个名称，它同样也适用于首席法官肖的社会。在哪个社会里，不论是私有财富还是公有财富，在某种程度上都是共同占有的。马萨诸塞州原先是一个特许的贸易公司；其居民既是公民，又是股东。这一公私交融的特点，现在有人认为，是不应该被忘记的。马萨诸塞州宪法序言中提到的“共同利益”这一概念，比“主权”、“权利”或政治理论家们的其他通用语要含糊得多，而“共和政体”一词的含意，应该更多地从经验方面而不是从逻辑方面来解释。
