原文赏析：
当贝佐斯思考下一步的计划时，他刚看完石黑一雄的小说《长日将尽》（Remains of the Day），讲的是一个管家满怀惆怅地回忆，在英国战争时期服役时的个人抉择和事业选择。
贝佐斯一直在回首人生的重要关头，当时他产生了一个想法，称其为“后悔最小化模型”，以此来确定在这个人生的重要关头，下一步该怎么走。
几年后贝佐斯说：“当你处于危急时刻时，小事也会成为你的绊脚石。我知道，当步入80岁高龄时，我不会考虑为何在1994年的人生低谷时放弃了华尔街的优厚待遇。因为当你80岁高龄时，你不会再担心这些事情。与此同时，我会为没有亲历互联网浪潮而感到后悔，因为那是一件具有革命性意义的事情。当我这样思考问题时……就不难做出决定了。”
有一次散步时，卡芬问贝佐斯，既然他们现在已经实现了一些早期目标，为何还极力向外扩张。贝佐斯回答：“当公司规模还非常弱小时，其他大公司会随时出现，并且极力抢夺你的果实。因此我们必须平衡竞争力量，来和那些老牌图书销售商抗衡。”

员工们很快又听到了一个新的名词：“扩张优先”（Get Big Fast）。贝佐斯解释说，这意味着公司越壮大，就越能从批发商英格拉姆、Baker&Taylor那里拿到低价货物，渠道能力就会越强。公司成长越快，就能进军更多的领域，那么就有资格加入电子行业前沿领域，并参与树立新品牌的角逐。
贝佐斯说：“我们的观点不一样，当我读到那封信时，我认为我们并非为了赢利而销售，而是通过帮助顾客做出购买决定来赢利。”
贝佐斯认为，雇佣最优秀和最聪明的员工是公司走向成功的保证。
他宣称：“每次招募员工时，无论是男性还是女性，都要一个比一个水平高，只有这样，才能使整个人才储备的标准提高。
亚马逊的高管在得知沃尔玛的出价后，进一步施加压力，威胁Quidsi的创始人说，如果他们卖给沃尔玛，像“老师”这样一个强有力的竞争对手可能会把纸尿布的价格降到零。Quidsi的董事会召开会议讨论亚马逊的提议，并考虑是否可能与其解约，恢复与沃尔玛的谈判。但是，贝佐斯把电子商务当作核战争一样看待，他那赫鲁晓夫式的纸尿布价格战让Quidsi非常担心：如果仓促接受沃尔玛的并购提案，这颗原子弹就会爆炸，他们在完成并购之前就会很容易因出错而功亏一篑。所以Quidsi的高管接受亚马逊主要是出于恐惧。2010年11月8日，亚马逊宣布收购Quidsi。
